Junkrat is an apt name for this Overwatch 2 Hero. Sometimes, you don’t even know he’s there until you’re back at spawn. He is an explosive-focused damage hero who fires bouncing explosive grenades from his launcher. Unlike Pharah, he does not take damage from his own explosives, so he is not afraid to run at you while letting his explosives fly. His kit also includes a steel trap that deals damage. At the same time, preventing captured enemies from moving for a brief period, and his ultimate ability is a remotely controlled bomb that detonates manually.
He’s a hero who can pack a mean punch and cause a lot of issues for opposing teams when used correctly. He thrives on movement and chaos. If you’re looking for a Hero that can cause a lot of Mayhem then look no further. This guide will walk you through Junkrat’s artillery, so you can become the bane of your enemies’ existence.
Abilities
Frag Launcher
Bouncing explosive projectile weapon.
This is Junkrat’s primary weapon. It fires projectiles that bounce off surfaces before exploding. It can be used close or from afar, which makes it great for clearing out rooms or landing surprise hits around corners. The higher you aim the weapon, the further the explosives travel, and with their bouncing abilities, they can cover large distances. They can also be shot directly at enemies to explode on impact.
The Frag Launcher used in conjunction with the Steel trap ability is a deadly combination. Also, with Junkrat’s passive ability allowing him not to take damage from his own explosives, he can also rush a trapped enemy for a massive amount of guaranteed damage.
Concussion Mine
Throw a knockback mine with LSHIFT, then detonate it with ABILITY 1
This is a knockback mine that you can throw to push back enemies. Unlike most mines in the game, this one is a remote detonation, so it has to be manually blown up rather than being activated by enemy proximity.
This mine is designed to knock enemies back and damage them a bit once detonated. With Junkrat’s passive Total Mayhem ability, he does not get hurt by the mine’s blast. This will allow you to throw the mine down and lure enemies into an explosive trap.
The Concussion Mine can also be used to help you traverse the map more quickly, so keep that in mind if you need to get somewhere fast.
Steel Trap
Place an immobilizing trap.
As the name suggests, this ability is a trapping ability. When you place down the Steel Trap and an enemy walks into it, they will be immobilized for a brief period. Your team can take advantage of this trap by applying pressure to the trapped enemy.
When an opponent is trapped, they can not fight back, so this is a good way to protect your team and objectives from approaching enemies. If you place a Concussion Mine on the Steel Trap and detonate it once your opponent is trapped, this can be a one-hit kill for some of the more squishy heroes.
Rip-Tire (Ultimate Ability)
Drive and detonate an exploding tire.
Rip-Tire is Junkrat’s ultimate ability. If the opposing team has a Junkrat, and you hear ‘Fire in the hole,’ scatter! The tire can jump up walls and get to the backline easily. This ultimate can be deadly and can take out a group of opponents all at once. It can be destroyed, but if it detonates, it can easily send anyone back to spawn.
The tire is remotely controlled, so be sure not to trigger your ultimate in the open. Rip-Tire is a great way to clear a room or eliminate multiple enemies simultaneously. It can easily get a team-kill if used in conjunction with other ultimate abilities like Zaria, Reinhardt, or even Sigma.
Total Mayhem
Deals no damage to self with explosives. Drop bombs on death
This passive ability is what makes Junkrat truly formidable. Unlike other explosive heroes like Pharah, Junkrat will not be damaged by his own detonations. Junkrat can push in with a little more ferocity without worrying about hit own blowback.
Another perk of this ability allows him to drop bombs upon his death. While you should not intentionally get sent to spawn to trigger this, it can catch others off-guard. It is pretty avoidable, but there’s always a chance someone will get caught in your blast from the afterlife.
Tips and Tricks
- Junkrat is best used close to mid-range. This will better help you control the trajectory of your Frag Launcher since the projectiles bounce before exploding.
- You can lay your Concussive Mine on top of your Steel Trap for a double surprise if an enemy lands on it. However, if you decide to do this, remember you will not have your Concussive Mine for traversal.
- Steel Trap is a great way to protect your team and objectives. Once an enemy is caught, they can not fight for the duration they are trapped. Be sure to apply pressure if you catch someone.
- Rip-Tire is a deadly ultimate ability. Used in conjunction with other abilities that can group up the opposing team, it can easily be the cause of a team-kill. Just be sure to hide yourself before unleashing Rip-Tire because you do have to control it remotely, which will leave your body vulnerable.
- Total Mayhem allows Junkrat to freely launch his explosives without fear of getting hurt by them. This can allow you to play more aggressively if the situation calls for it. He will also drop bombs upon death, which can catch some enemies off-guard.
Junkrat is great for players looking to be versatile. He can play close-range and cause massive damage or hang back and take his shots from a distance. He is definitely one of the more chaotic heroes and is sure to be a fun matchup if you decide to take him on.
