World of Warcraft quickly approaches its 20th anniversary, and Blizzard has unveiled the next chapter in the history of our beloved universe: The Worldsoul Saga. The first expansion in this trilogy, The War Within, will take us deep into Azeroth’s core. Here’s a quick breakdown of some key lore points and characters you need to know before the arrival of the expansion at the end of the month.
What sword?
- The colossal sword embedded in the desert of Silithus, left by Sargeras at the end of the Legion expansion, makes a comeback after two expansions of silence.
- This sword is a major plot point (who would have thought), as it becomes clear that it was aimed at something. It was aimed at Azeroth.

Visions and Azeroth’s Call
- Azeroth is sentient, known as a Worldsoul, and has started reaching out to some characters around the planet, sending visions across the world. She’s asking for help.
- The Raidiant Song is a series of recurring visions experienced by people across Azeroth. These visions depict ‘someone calling out from the heart of the world, like a voice from a dream.’ The source of this song is Azeroth herself.
- Magni Bronzebeard, previously the ‘Speaker of Azeroth,’ returns in a weathered state, responding to Azeroth’s new plea for help.
Xal’atath – The Harbinger of the Void:
- Xal’atath seems like the main antagonist in The War Within. Once a sentient dagger wielded by Shadow Priests in Legion, Xal’atath’s essence now has a body (and we helped her achieve it during Battle for Azeroth, whoops).
- She has allied with Iridikron, a Primal Incarnate, and together, they harness the power of the Dark Heart to corrupt and empower the Nerubians.

Anduin and Thrall
- Anduin comes back. After being away for the entire Dragonflight, he answers Azeroths call. Still, he’s deeply traumatized from his experiences in Shadowlands, has abandoned the Light, and is now struggling with his past actions.
- Thrall reconnects with Anduin, helping him confront these new threats. Both of them were called by Azeroth.

Alleria
- Alleria Windrunner, the elder sister of Sylvanas, is now the leader of the void elves and is determined to master the Void’s powers without losing herself.
- Following N’Zoths defeat, the Void’s whispers grew louder for her.
- Alleria’s mastery of the Void positions her as the key rival to Xal’atath.
- Her mentor, Locus-Walker, warned her: ‘The radiant visions you spoke of are the same my people had before the Void Lord Dimensius consumed our world.’

To Sum Up
Rather than giving a typical recap since we’ve already done a recap, here are some videos you might want to check out if you want to dive deeper. I’ve highlighted the main points, but there’s so much more – this game’s lore has many layers!
Have fun!
